They gather at night on the street corner
between the Vermont Inn
the Seattle Space Needle,
and the 7-Eleven and its parking lot
I know because we hear them at night
from our hotel room with the corner windows
lit up by the Space Needle
the street lights
and the light from the 7-Eleven
which stays open all night
and we hear them yelling
fuck-you contests
and other shouting matches
the Seattle bums
and I wonder why they chose that corner
of Seattle
rather than another
for their night quarters

I thought it could be for the 7-Eleven ,
where they can happen on some happy-wine
or for the parking lot light
that makes a good size stage

so in the morning I checked
what could be of interest to them
and all I found was a post
stuffed with cigarette butts
with white and yellow bits sticking out
like so many tiny little legs
out of a hellish cauldron
and I turned my head sideways
to read Cigarette Butt Recycling on it
and I thought
how considerate of them
how delicate
to come thither at night
to stick their cigarette butts
down with their dirty fingernails
to make sure
that they kept Seattle clean.

Je le sais parce que nous les entendons la nuit
de notre chambre d’hôtel avec les fenêtres qui font l’angle
éclairée par le Space Needle
les lampadaires
et la lumière du 7-Eleven
qui reste ouvert toute la nuit
et on les entend crier
des concours de fuck-you
et autres compétitions d’injures
les clochards de Seattle
et je me demande pourquoi ils ont choisi ce coin
plutôt qu’un autre
pour leurs quartiers de nuit

J’ai pensé que ça pourrait être pour le 7-Eleven
qui pourrait leur procurer une bouteille
ou pour la lumière du parking
idéal éclairage de scène

alors le matin j’ai cherché
ce qui pourrait les intéresser
et tout ce que j’ai trouvé était un poteau
bourré de mégots de cigarettes
avec des morceaux blancs et jaunes qui sortaient
comme autant de petites jambes
d’un chaudron infernal
et j’ai tourné la tête sur le côté
pour lire « recyclage de mégots de cigarette »
et j’ai pensé
que c’était bien prévenant de leur part
très délicat
qu’ils viennent ici la nuit
y coller leurs mégots de cigarettes
avec leurs ongles sales
pour s’assurer
qu’ils gardaient Seattle propre.

Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas Seattle, le Space Needle est le monument touristique de la ville, une tour futuriste construite pour l’exposition universelle de 1962.
Le 7-Eleven est une chaine de commerces ouverts à toute heure sans interruption.
