I read a book by a woman
who traveled to each and every country in the world,
often facing insane situations;
like sitting 17 hours in a bus,
or hacking her way through the Amazonian forest.
Repeatedly she exclaims:
… but it was all worth it!
as she reached yet another earthly paradise
and shares exotic drinks with her friends.
The other day I was in Boston before church
as we’ve been doing every Sunday for the past decade.
Each time I make the 15mn walk to the end of the street
to visit the bookstore.
A Nor’Easter struck us and I was not prepared —
I felt the rain massaging my shoulders, running down my neck,
through my so-called rain jacket; my jeans were swollen with water
from the waist down, as my socks turned to sponges in my boots.
On the way back, lifting my weighted legs,
hood strings tightened around my face
I considered how insane this all was,
and asked myself was it worth it?
I thought of the poetry section
where my steps had taken me this time,
and Bukowski’s poem about the Dentist, among others
and I thought, okay, it was all worth it.
faisant face à des situations insensées ;
soulevant péniblement mes jambes lourdes d’eau,
