SHREVE, CRUMP AND LOWE
Today the sermon was about hubris.
One of my first employers sent me out
to a prestigious jewelry store named
Shreve, Crump and Lowe
on Boston’s ritziest street,
only to have a silver cup engraved as an award.
Along the years I was often entrusted with
purchasing shiny trophies for other people –
I found this task subtly humbling.
Not that I wanted a little bit of metal, or
a fake crystal paperweight with my name on it —–
I am reasonably satisfied with what I achieved.
And the day my daughter flew the nest,
she left behind a wealth of plastic,
wood, glass and metal
beribboned, engraved and etched awards,
so many that I didn’t know what to do with them.
They ended up in a storage box
in the basement.
Yet when I pass Shreve, Crump and Lowe
I am reminded of the fact
that I have never stood on the receiving end
of such a recompense. LOL

L’un de mes premiers employeurs m’avait envoyée
dans une prestigieuse bijouterie —
du nom de Shreve, Crump and Lowe,

je suis plus ou moins satisfaite de ce que j’ai accompli.
Et le jour où ma fille a quitté le nid,
elle a laissé derrière elle une multitude de récompenses
en plastique, bois, verre et métal,
ornées de rubans et d’inscriptions gravées,
si nombreuses que je ne savais qu’en faire.
Elles ont fini dans un carton de rangement,
au sous-sol.
Pourtant, lorsque je passe devant Shreve, Crump and Lowe,
je me rappelle toutes les fois que je n’ai pas reçu
de telle récompense. LOL
